Interior vs. exterior paint

Interior paint is formulated to resist scrubbing, stains, and normal household wear. It is not UV-stable.

Exterior paint contains UV inhibitors, mildewcides, and binders that remain flexible through temperature changes. Never use interior paint outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between flat and eggshell paint?

Flat paint has no sheen and hides surface imperfections well, but is hard to clean. Eggshell has a slight sheen (5–10%), is more washable, and is the most popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms.

What sheen is best for kitchen and bathroom walls?

Satin or semi-gloss are best for kitchens and bathrooms. Both resist moisture and can be wiped clean. Semi-gloss is more durable and is often used for tile-like surfaces near sinks and stoves.

Should I use latex or oil-based paint?

Latex (water-based) paint is best for most interior walls — it dries quickly, cleans up with water, and has low odor. Oil-based paint offers superior hardness for trim, doors, and high-wear surfaces but takes longer to dry and requires mineral spirits for cleanup.

Do I need primer before painting?

Primer is needed when painting over dark colors, bare drywall, stains, or a significantly different color. "Paint + primer in one" products reduce but don't eliminate the need for a separate primer coat on difficult surfaces.

How many gallons do I need to paint a room?

One gallon covers 350–400 sq ft per coat. Add up all wall areas and divide by 350 for a two-coat job. Use the Paint Calculator to enter room dimensions for an accurate estimate including doors and windows.
