Cost breakdown

Laminate flooring

  • Materials: $1–$5/sq ft
  • Underlayment: $0.25–$0.50/sq ft
  • Installation (DIY-friendly): $1–$3/sq ft professional
  • Total installed: $2.25–$8.50/sq ft

Solid hardwood flooring

  • Materials: $6–$15/sq ft
  • Installation (requires professional): $3–$8/sq ft
  • Total installed: $9–$23/sq ft

For a 300 sq ft room: laminate = $675–$2,550 vs. hardwood = $2,700–$6,900 installed.

Durability and lifespan

Hardwood wins on lifespan. Well-maintained solid hardwood can be refinished 3–5 times and last 100+ years. It improves with age and adds genuine character.

Laminate is more durable day-to-day — it resists scratches, dents, and moisture better than hardwood. But it cannot be refinished. Once the wear layer is gone (typically 15–25 years), the floor must be replaced.

Water and moisture resistance

Laminate wins for moisture resistance. Modern laminate has a sealed surface that handles spills well. Some premium laminate (waterproof LVP) is rated for bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Solid hardwood swells and warps with moisture. It is not recommended for basements, bathrooms, kitchens, or any space over a concrete slab.

Resale value and ROI

Real estate agents consistently rank hardwood flooring as one of the top 5 ROI home improvements. Buyers recognize and pay more for solid hardwood. Laminate adds value vs. carpet but typically does not command a hardwood premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laminate or hardwood flooring better?

It depends on your priorities. Hardwood is better for home value, longevity, and refinishing potential. Laminate is better for budget, durability against moisture and pets, and DIY-friendly installation.

Is laminate flooring cheaper than hardwood?

Yes — laminate costs $1–$5/sq ft vs. $6–$15/sq ft for solid hardwood. For a 500 sq ft area, laminate saves $2,500–$5,000 in materials alone. Installation labor is similar for both.

Does laminate flooring look like real wood?

Modern laminate is very convincing, especially luxury laminate ($4–$5/sq ft). It uses high-resolution photos of real wood. Up close or underfoot, hardwood still has more visual depth and warmth.

How long does laminate vs hardwood last?

Hardwood lasts 50–100+ years with refinishing. Laminate lasts 15–25 years and cannot be refinished — when it wears out, it must be replaced. This is the main long-term cost difference.

Can laminate be installed over concrete?

Yes — laminate is often preferred over concrete slabs because it floats (no glue or nails needed) and handles moisture better than solid hardwood. Use a moisture barrier underlayment and engineered hardwood if you want wood over concrete.
