How to measure for tile
- 1. Floor or wall: Measure length × width in feet. For L-shaped rooms, use the Irregular option to add sections.
- 2. Backsplash: Measure each section separately (length × height). Add them with the Irregular shape option.
- 3. Select your tile size: If your tile isn't in the list, contact us — we add new sizes regularly.
- 4. Diagonal lay: Setting tile at 45° requires 15% waste because edge cuts are larger. Check this option for diagonal patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 12×12 tiles do I need for a 100 sq ft floor?
A 100 sq ft floor with 10% waste needs 110 sq ft of tile. At 1 tile per sq ft (12×12 inches), that's 110 tiles. Always round up to whole boxes.
How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Divide your total area (in sq ft) by the square footage of one tile, then multiply by 1.10 for 10% waste (or 1.15 for diagonal patterns). Round up to full boxes.
How much thinset do I need for tile?
One 50 lb bag of thinset covers approximately 40 sq ft with a 3/8-inch notched trowel. For large-format tiles (18×18 and bigger), use a larger notch — coverage may be less.
What tile size is best for a small bathroom?
12×12 or 12×24 tiles work well in most bathrooms — larger tiles create fewer grout lines and make the space feel bigger. 6×6 tiles suit small shower floors where slip resistance matters.
Thinset: 50 lb bag ≈ 40 sq ft (3/8" trowel). Grout: 10 lb bag ≈ 50 sq ft (1/8" joint, 12×12 tile). See our methodology page.
