The formula
Number of pavers = (Area in sq ft × 144) ÷ (Paver length in” × Paver width in”)
Then multiply by 1.10 to add a 10% waste factor for cuts at edges.
Coverage by paver size
| Paver size | Pavers per sq ft | For 100 sq ft | For 200 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 inch (brick) | 4.5 | 495 pavers | 990 pavers |
| 6×6 inch | 4.0 | 440 pavers | 880 pavers |
| 6×9 inch | 2.7 | 297 pavers | 594 pavers |
| 12×12 inch | 1.0 | 110 pavers | 220 pavers |
| 16×16 inch | 0.56 | 62 pavers | 124 pavers |
| 12×24 inch | 0.5 | 55 pavers | 110 pavers |
| 24×24 inch | 0.25 | 28 pavers | 56 pavers |
All counts include 10% waste factor.
Complete patio project: what you need
For a 12×16 ft patio (192 sq ft) with 12×12” concrete pavers:
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Pavers (12×12”) | 211 pieces |
| Sand base (1” deep) | 0.59 cu yd or 8 bags |
| Gravel base (4” deep) | 2.37 cu yd |
| Polymeric sand (joints) | 2–3 bags (50 lb) |
How to lay pavers: base preparation
- Excavate — Remove 6–8 inches of soil (4” gravel + 1” sand + paver thickness)
- Compact subgrade — Use a plate compactor on the natural soil
- Gravel base — Add 4 inches of compacted crushed stone (2 lifts of 2”)
- Sand bedding — Spread 1 inch of coarse sand, screed level
- Set pavers — Lay with 1/8”–1/4” joint spacing
- Polymeric sand — Sweep into joints, mist to activate
Paver patterns and waste factors
| Pattern | Extra waste to add |
|---|---|
| Running bond | 5% |
| Herringbone (45°) | 10–15% |
| Basket weave | 5% |
| Circular patterns | 15–20% |
Diagonal and circular patterns require more cuts, so plan for extra waste.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pavers do I need for a 10x10 patio?
A 10×10 ft patio (100 sq ft) needs approximately 450 standard 4×8 inch brick pavers, or about 100 pieces of 12×12 inch concrete pavers. Always add 5–10% extra for cuts and waste.
How do I calculate the number of pavers I need?
Divide your patio area (in square inches) by the area of one paver (in square inches), then add 5–10% for waste. For example: 100 sq ft = 14,400 sq in. One 12×12" paver = 144 sq in. 14,400 ÷ 144 = 100 pavers + 10 extra = 110 total.
How much sand do I need under pavers?
You need a 1-inch sand bed under pavers. For 100 sq ft: 100 × 1/12 = 0.31 cubic yards, or about 4–5 bags of paver sand (50 lb bags). See our Sand Calculator for exact amounts.
How thick should the gravel base be under pavers?
Use 4–6 inches of compacted gravel base for a patio, and 6–8 inches for a driveway. Compact in 2-inch lifts for best results.
How many pavers are on a pallet?
A standard pallet holds 80–100 square feet of pavers, depending on paver size and the supplier. Check the pallet spec sheet from your supplier for the exact count.
